But first: where do lesbian vampires come from? Aside from Transylvanian Lesbos (a mythical place that I have just made up, but it sounds like this should be a real location or at least the setting of a hot new vampire film), there is a literary history to the lesbian vampire. History and horniness in one blog post? You betcha!

Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu wrote a novella called Carmilla in 1872 that has the distinction of being the very first lesbian vampire novel. This is back in the 1800s! It's before Dracula! The plot follows a countess who seduces and sucks the life out of a young woman named Laura. This story becomes the original prototype for the numerous lesbian vampire stories to come.

The oldest lesbian vampire film might surprise you. No, it's not from the 60s or even the 50s. It's from the 1930s! 1936's Dracula's Daughter, a Universal Pictures drama, was a subtextual sapphic sequel to Dracula. The story goes that Universal actually leaned into some of the lesbianism while marketing the film, rather than hiding it. The big shots knew that sex sells - especially sex between women.

Lesbian vampires were not really seen again until the late 60s when monster movies made a huge comeback. Of course, lesbian vampires made a comeback and they were nuder and sexier than ever before. The first female vampire film to return was 1960s Blood and Roses, which comes to us from France and was directly based on the novella Carmilla. The rest is history!
