Do gentlemen thieves exist anywhere outside the mind of Hollywood screenwriters? Well, it appears so. Arsène Lupin (2004) is the story of the legendary turn-of-the-last-century titular French jewel thief. The update of this historical figure by director Jean-Paul Saolmé gets a modern action feel, which isn’t bad. Even better is Kristin Scott Thomas, whose jewels steal the show here. In a somewhat murky water scene, Kristin’s dress is washed away and her precious stones revealed. It’s the crime of the century.
