Hollywood has pumped out its share of happy-hooker flicks, from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) to Julia Roberts’s career-defining role in the Cinderella knock-off Pretty Woman (1990), but when it comes to a gritty, nonjudgmental view of a day in the life of a play-for-pay lady, the Oscar should go to relatively unknown performers in little-seen indie flicks, like Louise Smith’s poignant and true-life portrayal of "Molly," a Yale-educated, lesbian prostitute employed by an upscale Manhattan house of ill repute in Working Girls (1986). Naked through much of her performance, Lousie graciously shares her bared soul along with her bared bush.
